Using Chrysin Creams And Supplements To Eliminate Sex Hormone Imbalances

By John Mulder

Chrysin is a natural substance found in certain plants, including the Indian trumpetflower, two classes of passion flowers and chamomile. It is also present in honeycomb and one type of mushroom, namely the Pleurotus ostreatus. When extracted from these sources it can be used in medications that treat inflammation and anxiety as well as bodybuilding supplements, fitness supplements and weightlifting supplements.

Individuals who use it as a bodybuilding supplement do so because in vitro studies show it to be an effective anti-aromatase inhibitor. The liver produces aromatase. It plays a role in converting testosterone and androstenedione into estrone and estradiol, which are estrogens. This conversion takes place in the brain, liver and, fat tissue.

Aromatase leads to larger amounts of estrogen and lower levels of testosterone in the blood. Inhibiting its action creates the opposite effect. When men reach the age of 30, they typically have lower amounts of testosterone. Men who want to retain their young will often seek out ways to inhibit estrogen production and increase levels of available testosterone.

A number of factors can cause declining testosterone levels. One is increased aromatase enzyme activity, which depletes testosterone while increasing the amount of estrogen in the body. The excess estrogen works on the brain to decrease testosterone production in a negative feedback loop that further unbalances the sex hormone ratio.

The amount of SHBG, or sex hormone binding globulin, increases in the presence of elevated estrogen levels. Since SHBG binds to any remaining testosterone, the levels of male sex hormone drop even more. When the body experiences a sex hormone imbalance, it results in a loss of muscle mass, an increase in body fat, lower energy levels, and a decrease in strength.

Supplementing with testosterone can restore the normal balance of sex hormones. Bodybuilders do this to improve strength and restore muscle mass. When excessive aromatization causes the imbalance, the desired results are achieved by inhibiting the action of aromatase.

The amount of chrysin the intestine is able to absorb is very small because it is insoluble in water. Large doses are necessary for the absorption rate to achieve the desired results. In some studies, oral administration is more effective when taken in combination with piperine but this still requires high doses. This is why many bodybuilders use chrysin cream topically instead of ingesting supplements. Creams can be effective in amounts that are one-tenth the oral dose. They bypass the liver and stomach, which minimizes gastric degradation and makes the active ingredient more effective.
