How Being Overweight Affects Relationships

Let's face it. Being overweight affects your relationships. If you have one. For many people with extra weight a relationship just does not happen. They do not feel attractive, and they do not appear attractive to the opposite sex either. After a little while, they just give up and stop trying. Often, when these people do have a relationship, they settle for someone that is not their ideal match because they feel it is the best they can do. Or perhaps you have a good relationship but now your partner is in this situation. How does this make you feel?

The connection between self esteem and being overweight and its effect on relationships has been much studied. It is very hard on your self esteem to be heavy when the rest of the world, or so it seems, is skinny or lean. We are bombarded every day by images of celebrities in magazines and on TV, and most of them are quite svelte and beautiful. While big can be beautiful, or so some of the ads or songs say, it does not always feel beautiful.

For some people, being overweight starts in childhood. You know, that fat kid that everyone used to tease. Pudgy they said, or fat and happy, they were the ones that no one wanted to be with or choose as a partner in the class. Often times these kids already had eating problems, eating too much highly processed foods, or a bad activity level as they sat in front of the television all night. In a sense it was not their fault, as they learned all of this from their parents. Sooner or later, these fat kids have self esteem issues too and their relationships start to suffer.

Whether you are someone who started as a fat kid, or whether you are overweight because of more recent activities, it is not too late to do something about it. There are many diets and diet programs available these days, and it doesn't need to cost you a lot of money or mean that you have to starve yourself. But you do have to be determined, and your self esteem and relationships will improve, as you work towards your goals.

An important thing to remember is that a good diet has two components: a healthy eating and moderate exercise. You will need to cut calories to lose weight, but it does not mean you need to starve yourself. There are many diets and diet programs out there that do work. Most of them however require a little time. If it is your partner that is overweight, you may need to be patient and encouraging. Perhaps you could do some healthy exercise together, like going for a walk. It is relatively easy to lose extra weight, the challenge however is keeping it off. For most people this requires a major lifestyle change. What we do know is that if you are carrying extra pounds, once you experience weight loss your health and your self esteem will improve. So will your relationships.
